Dislocated Worker Program and

Senior Community  Service Employment Program

What is SCSEP?

SCSEP stands for the Senior Community Service Employment Program. Its mission is to provide job training and placement for people with limited financial resources who are age 55 or older, and to provide employers with trained, motivated workers.  SCSEP is an equal opportunity employer/program.

I’m looking for work. How

can SCSEP help me?

When you become a SCSEP trainee, you’ll receive personalized help in meeting your goals. Maybe you would like to learn a new skill, such as working with computers. Maybe it has been many years since you were in the workforce and you need help easing back into the working world. Or maybe you just need help being placed in a job. If your situation matches any of the ones described above, or if you’re just looking for a fresh start, SCSEP can help.

Where do participants train?

After receiving orientation, SCSEP participants are first placed in part-time job training with a non-profit agency.  Local non-profit agencies such as libraries, community centers, and social service organizations utilize participants. The salary of the participant is paid for by SCSEP. This gives the agency a dedicated worker and provides the participant with on-the-job experience and an opportunity to re-enter the workforce.

Some participants are hired by the non-profit agency they worked for, while others may move to another non-profit agency after several months to a year in order to acquire new skills. The ultimate goal is to find a good job in the public or private sector.

I’m an employer. Why should I hire an older worker?

Experienced. Qualified. Responsible. Talented. These words represent the values demonstrated by older workers. SCSEP participants possess a work ethic unmatched by most other employees.

A survey of human resources managers showed “loyalty and dedication to the company” along with “commitment to doing quality work” as the top two qualities of older workers. These qualities serve a business not only through the older worker’s efforts, but by providing an example for other employees to follow.

Hiring older workers brings stability to a workplace by reducing turnover. This saves money in the long run by reducing recruitment and training costs. Some employers may even qualify to take part in a program that pays the new employee’s salary during an on-the-job training experience.

Why SCSEP?

For more than 40 years, SCSEP has helped millions of Americans find jobs in community service and the private sector. Each year, more than 100,000 participants receive job training and over 20,000 are placed with employers through 69 grantees, including 13 national non-profit organizations and 56 units of state and territorial governments.
